Richard Liu Qiangdong, JD.com’s top executive, attended Renmin University, where he pursued sociology. Besides focusing on his course work while at the University, Richard Liu spared time and learn computer programming. At the same time, Liu also worked part-time handwriting copies of documents and letters. During this time, he managed to make some savings to buy a cell phone and personal computer. He even went ahead to build a house for his parents back in the village.

While Richard Liu has created one of the most recognized e-commerce businesses globally, he has had his fair share of failures. For instance, he once made some savings from a computer programming job and opened up a restaurant close to the University s entrance. However, his naivete in the business and the lack of management experience led him to trust his employees, who went on to take advantage of him.

Some began to forge reimbursements receipts, while others stole the restaurant’s earnings from the cash register. As a result, in just a year after its operation, the restaurant was out of business. Despite this failure, Richard Liu still desired to run his own business and established JD immediately after graduating from Renmin University. He even enrolled at the China Europe Business School in 1996, where he pursued an EMBA program. Refer to this article for related information.

Richard began his professional career at Japan Life, a herbal supplement company, where he eventually took charge of the computer and services department. He officially started Jingdong in 1998, a storefront involved in the selling of magneto-optical products. He always strived to offer authentic and high-quality products, unlike his close competitors that often-sold counterfeit products.

Thanks to Qiangdong’s business model that relied on honesty and reliability, he saw significant growth within the first few years of his operation. In just five years, he had managed to expand to over 12 chain stores across Shenyang, Shanghai and Beijing.

Richard has managed to accrue a few important accolades over the years Richard Liu has been featured as an Honoree in Variety 500 website entitled, “JD.com Richard Liu; Founder / Chairman / CEO”, as a result of his persistence, innovation, and hard work.
